Forget the clichés. Riding a scooter isn't just for kids: it's a fun hobby as well as being a handy means of transport as you can get around quickly and efficiently without taking up as much space as a bike. As an adult, the scooter you buy will depend on how far you want to travel on it. Check out our tips for helping you choose your scooter.

ADULT SCOOTERS

When choosing your scooter, you need to understand the different elements that can vary from model to model. Scooter wheels come in different diameters. The bigger the diameter, the faster the scooter will be. The hardness of the rubber on the wheels is also very important. Softer rubber gives you good grip and comfort but tends to wear out faster than hard rubber. To help you find your way around wheel sizes, the hardness is indicated with an A and the diameter is given in millimetres. The deck is the area where your feet go. Its width will depend on the model, and it will generally be made of aluminium to make it sturdy and durable. ABEC is the standard that defines the fluidity of bearings. The lower the number, the lower the speed. With an ABEC 7 bearing, riding will be more comfortable because you won't need to push the scooter so much. The suspension at the front and back helps your scooter to effectively cushion bumps in the pavement. However, it will also make your scooter less responsive when you push off. The brakes can be placed at the front, on the handlebar just like with a bike, or at the back above the wheel. Where they are positioned doesn't affect how well your brakes work. A good folding system is essential if you're taking your scooter on public transport, which is why you need to take a look at how quick and easy it is to fold.

SCOOTERS FOR SHORT JOURNEYS

Scooters are a very popular means of transport for city-dwellers because they're environmentally friendly and much faster than walking. If you're doing short journeys (1 to 2 km), you should get wheels that are a minimum of 175 mm and ABEC 5 bearings to give you enough momentum so you don't have to push too often. Over short distances you don't necessarily need suspension because it weighs the scooter down. It's best to prioritise lightness over comfort. Go for a light model that'll be practical and enjoyable to ride.

SCOOTERS FOR LONG JOURNEYS

If you're doing slightly longer journeys (2 to 5 km), you want a bit more comfort and a fast, sturdy scooter. You therefore need to choose a model with wheels that measure at least 200 mm as they're particularly suited to longer distances, needing less pushing. The bearings should be at least ABEC 5 for a more fluid glide. Suspension isn't vital but it'll make things a bit more pleasant if you hit any bumps or potholes in the pavement. If you're using public transport, opt for a lighter model that's easy to fold up in order to save time when travelling. There are plenty of long-distance scooters available to help you get around town more efficiently.
